Boonton Township NJ ( -Technological advances influence healthcare delivery. Nowadays, surgery is less invasive and length of hospital stays have shortened. Medical records are easily accessible and information transfers instantly. But as healthcare evolves, there is also less time spent with a patient. In fact, a recent survey found that 80% of patients feel their complaints were not resolved by their healthcare professional. Many hospitals have expanded the care offered to patients by exploring integrative therapies such as acupuncture and chiropractics. Energy therapies are becoming more available in the hospital setting yet few patients know what it is or how it works.

As a nurse interested in energy therapies, my research led me to Healing Touch. I liked that it was modeled from the nursing process, endorsed by the American Holistic Nursing Association and founded by a nurse. It has specific techniques and a standardized curriculum leading towards a certification process. I began my journey in 2012 and became certified by Healing Beyond Borders in 2016. But this modality isn’t just for nurses nor do you need to become certified. Basic techniques and knowledge about energy work taught in a beginners course can help chronic pain, emotional issues, and stress. In fact, I was looking for an alternative therapy for my daughter’s migraines when I explored energy therapies.

I strongly believe in the mind-body connection and our innate ability to self-heal. Pharmaceuticals have only been around for about 100 years so other healing therapies from Eastern medicine and alternative sources intrigue me. The human body is designed to be in a state of harmony so why has disease increased dramatically? There’s multiple factors to consider. Stress is known to activate the fight or flight response and send our body into a state of alarm. Excessive stress means a constant state of alarm leading to chronic disease. Attitude come into play as well. Negative feelings like fear, insecurity and anxiety lead to emotional imbalance and stress. Balancing all realms – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual leads to optimal health. By being aware of our body and thoughts we can improve our health. We can improve our life by intentionally creating harmony and listening to what our body needs.

So what is energy therapy? Energy is everything and it is beyond our senses yet it is measurable. There are vibrations emitted from our life energy and we can measure the energy in our food which is known as calories. Energy interconnects us all and can be manipulated. We have an energy field that can be blocked or congested. By using simple techniques, the energy field can be cleared relieving the associated symptoms of pain, anxiety or fatigue.

Healing Touch is a collection of standardized, noninvasive techniques that clear, energize, and balance the human energy field. A coherent and balanced energy field supports the inherent ability to heal. Healing Touch is safe for all ages and works in harmony with, is complementary to, and may be integrated with standard medical care.

It is beneficial in calming anxiety and reducing symptoms of depression, decreasing pain, strengthening the immune system, enhancing recovery from surgery, complementing care for neck and spine problems, deepening spiritual connection, supporting cancer care, creating a sense of well-being, easing acute and chronic conditions, and supporting resiliency in health care providers.

Healing Touch is used in a wide variety of settings including hospitals, long-term care facilities, private practices, hospices, and spas.  It was founded in 1989 as a continuing education program for nurses, massage therapists, other health care professionals, and lay persons.  Today, Healing Touch is taught in universities, medical and nursing schools, and other settings around the world.

The first session involves a consultation in addition to the Healing Touch session.  The practitioner will ask a series of questions about your physical, mental, and emotional situation, and will answer questions about Healing Touch. Then you lay fully clothed on a massage table while the practitioner gently places his or her hands slightly above or on the body. The session generally lasts 40 to 60 minutes, and people frequently report feeling deeply relaxed and peaceful during and after the session. Because there may be a cumulative effect of using Healing Touch over time, regular sessions are recommended.
